Some project management jobs pay well, particularly senior construction roles, but “project manager” covers too many industries and levels for one salary answer. An assistant project manager and a director responsible for a major capital programme have very different pay and accountability.

Jobs and Skills Australia identifies construction managers among higher-earning occupations and publishes their median full-time weekly earnings. That statistic describes a broad occupation group, not a salary promise for a client-side project manager. It also does not tell you what one current vacancy in Sydney will pay.

For a closer job-title comparison, SEEK’s advertised-job data refreshed in May 2026 put Australian client-side project manager jobs at an indicative $130,000–$150,000 a year. Check the range again when applying; the advertised title and experience level still matter.

What affects pay?

Project complexity, budget and risk matter, as do the number of projects, direct reports, commercial authority, location and scarcity of relevant experience. A role that combines design, procurement, stakeholder and contract knowledge may be valued differently from one focused on site delivery. Industry and employer type also matter.

Compare total packages

Check whether a quoted figure includes superannuation, bonus, vehicle or travel allowance, overtime and leave. A contractor day rate should account for unpaid leave, insurance, gaps between assignments and business expenses. Two offers with similar headline figures may not have similar value.

Choose for the work as well as the number

Good career progression comes from making sound decisions and showing what you delivered. Look for a role with manageable project load, clear authority and support. A large pay rise may not compensate for constant unresolved scope and unrealistic expectations.
